At Monolithic in Italy, Texas, a second pilot study was conducted in early October 2008. The testing was to evaluate a second compost cover fabric. This fabric will be tested and monitored for durability, tinsel strength and the ability to keep oder contained during the composting process. The second pile actually consists of organic food waste, poultry parts and cow manure collected straight from the pasture.

The Monolithic food waste collection drive was organized and a two week partnership between Monolithic and several area businesses, etc. was established. The collection schedule required daily (sometimes nightly) trash pick-ups. Each participating party was given a Monolithic trash bin to collect organic food scraps for the second pilot study. I would like to give a sincere, “Thank you,” to the following businesses, residents and ranches located in or near the city of Italy, Texas for their assistance and time:

Mama’s Place – Italy, Texas
The Uptown Cafe – Italy, Texas
Texas Best Barbecue – Italy, Texas
Italy Health & Rehabilitation Center – Italy, Texas
Monolithic Dome Institute – Italy, Texas
Fran’s Fryers – Milford, Texas
Tessa & Mike South – Italy, Texas
Ann & Ervin Byers – Italy, Texas
Harper Cattle Company, LLC – Waxahachie, Texas

Monolithic constructed the second In-vessel Aerated Static Pile (IASP) under the guidance of MOR (Managed Organic Recycling) and its president John Bouey. MOR is an industry leader in compost recycling and David South of Monolithic has teamed with Bouey to ultimately have a positive global impact. The goal is to convert individual and organically farmed compost piles into nutrient-enriched top soil, which promotes healthier gardening and crops while keeping our planet whole. Developing a compost cover that makes decomposition faster and more affordable while containing odors and smells is truly what the Monolithic test sites are all about.
