What is a Compost Cover?

A compost cover does what its name implies: it covers a compost pile. Generally, compost is organic material set in a pile to rot.

Almost anything can be used as a compost cover – straw, dirt, burlap – but that doesn’t mean that it will work well.

The cover should control what goes on within the compost heap. That control is important: Compost that gets too wet drowns, but compost that gets too dry stops composting, and all compost stinks.

Done properly, the cover encourages the composting process and prevents the stink from escaping into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, many compost covers do not perform adequately.

Organic materials used for compost can include animal and fish parts, waste products from sewage treatment plants, animal manure, etc. Literally anything organic can be composted.

Often a mixture of materials works best. Something high in nitrogen does well with something low in nitrogen. Something low in nitrogen might need nitrogen added, such as fertilizer that is high in nitrogen.

Again, the primary purpose of a compost cover is to help control the actual composting process. Its secondary – but equally important purpose – is to control odor emissions.

The MOR Compost Cover

It differs from other covers in that it utilizes an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) micro-pore membrane laminated between two protective layers of polyester. This technology allows the MOR Compost Cover to deliver environmental protection, odor and emission control, and process regulation while reducing the composting time necessary to produce a stable finished product.

Weather is no longer an issue when using the MOR Composting Cover, as the cover protects the composting process from the outside environment. Rain, sleet, and snow are no match for the MOR Compost Cover, allowing year-round production of stable finished compost.

Increased UV protection also allows for greater cover durability no matter what latitude you compost at.

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odor molecules are blocked by the ePTFE micro-pore membrane and a condensate layer that forms underneath the cover. This property allows the MOR Compost Cover to meet strict air board standards and reduce the environmental impact of composting.

The reduction in odors also helps promote composting operations by reducing, if not eliminating, neighborhood complaints surrounding odors.

In combination with an aeration system, the MOR Compost Cover reduces the composting process allowing for increased production without increasing a composting facilities footprint. Process regulation also allows time and temperature requirements to be met without the constant turning required in other composting methods.

MOR Compost Covers provide increased efficiency to both new and existing composting operations.
